not happy...

Some things just don't turn out the way you hope...

I have had a commission for some placemats. They have turned out just fine...or they will do when they are finished.
Along with the placemats the customer asked for a couple of centre table mats in blue/red colourways.

Let's face it I have plenty of these colours in my scraps so it should have been pretty straight forward.

It started out well...I was liking the look of the HSTs...

I also was liking the pieces I had added to frame the HSTs...

and I was pretty much in heaven with the little row of dinky sized HSTs...

But then something happened.
I was suddenly not as keen when I had added these rows in.
For some reason that I can't put my finger on it just wasn't working for me.

I am wondering if it was the "make it up as you go along" approach, or the "I really haven't got time for this but I must get it done" pressure or whether it's the buckling on the 4th final side that is annoying me.

Whatever it is, I am not happy.
Not happy that I spent an evening making it only to not feel comfortable including it in the commission.
Not happy that now I have to do the whole process all over again.
Grrr...what to do?

I think it's lovely! Would blocking help the wavy edge?

Ok obviously I'm not a quilter but I do know you and the first thing that sprang to mind is that it's busier than your usual designs. I would've 'expected' a plainer outside edge bit (I believe that's the technical term), so maybe that's what doesn't feel right. Or not. I think it's fab though. xx

I think it is lovely, and blocking would definitely help. Tricky one :-/

i think it looks great, but I know what you mean about the 'make it up as you go along' scenario - I do it all the time, doesn't always work!?

I think that the blue dotty fabric is making it too busy. What about a plainer border in grey? Hope this might be helpful. Di x

I love the outside triangular piece, but I think the red strip is a little wide and overpowers the subtle colours. Good luck with your commission!

I did that the other week with a mini, thinking l
Iots of tiny pieces all crazy pieced would be cute and homely, wrong, I thought it looked a mess! But I am so self critical, have you shown your customer and asked if they like it? I do!

It's so cute even with the wavy edges.
I hope you find a solution to fix it =D

You know that I'm usually a make-it-up-as-you-go kind of girl, but I often have the same problem - only when I see it do I know whether it works or not ;) My call on this is that it's a colour thing, Karen - you don't have the strongest colour (the red border) on the outside framing the piece, it's halfway so that the beautiful little triangles around the edge get lost visually. That's my opinion anyway. It still looks gorgeous. Can you add another border in the red? Good luck with experimenting :) Kx

Personally, I really like it. A lot! I do agree with tara, it is much busier than your normal finishes. Are you going to scrap it completely or just try and modify it a bit?

I like the simplicity of your usual designs but this too! Not sure I can advise - go with your gut feeling that is what makes you You!
